Measure a real page, not just the homepage

Choose one article, one service page, and any important commerce or form page. Test mobile and desktop conditions. Keep notes on the date, template, and current configuration. Use field data when it is available, with lab diagnostics to investigate the causes.

A score is a summary, not a task list. Find out what is delaying the content or making the page unresponsive before installing another optimization plugin.

Check the server and cache path

WordPress performance depends on hosting, configuration, plugins, and the work needed to generate a response. Investigate slow server responses and cache behavior. Be careful with pages containing personalized information, carts, or account data; caching those requires an appropriate strategy.

Make changes on a safe copy when possible. Record the previous setting so you can reverse a change that breaks a form or layout.

Follow the biggest content element

Identify the image or text element that determines Largest Contentful Paint. Check when it becomes available and why it is delayed. Avoid lazy-loading an above-the-fold image that is needed for the main content; size and deliver images appropriately.

Review the extra work

  • Remove unused functionality after checking what relies on it.
  • Measure third-party scripts and embeds.
  • Avoid loading a complex widget on every page when only one page needs it.
  • Reserve dimensions for images, video, and advertising spaces.
  • Retest menus, forms, and checkout after changes.

Keep a before-and-after record

Log the URL, condition, observed bottleneck, change, and verification. Compare the same scenario. If you tested a cached page before the change and an uncached page after it, the comparison may be misleading.

Finish by checking the visitor’s task. A page that loads quickly but has a broken form has not been improved in the way the business needs.
